How does splitting work?
- The order is receivedOrders placed through the 「配送先を分ける」 (Split shipping addresses) block are eligible for splitting. The same order is never split twice.
- Amounts are finalizedAmounts are calculated for each address. Discounts are prorated per line item, and any rounding remainder goes into the order for the last address. The app moves on to creating orders only if the split orders' total matches the original order exactly, down to the yen.
- Split orders are createdOne order per address is created as Paid. The buyer is not charged again. After splitting, the buyer receives an order confirmation email for each address (one per split order).
- The original order is canceledOnce all split orders are created, the original order is canceled and the inventory is restocked. No refund is issued, and the customer's payment stays on the original order. The buyer is not notified of the cancellation. The original order is tagged multi-ship-source, and the split order numbers (such as #2017 and #2018) are added to its notes.
- DoneThe status in the split orders list becomes 「完了」 (Completed).
What happens to the original order's payment and refunds?
Canceling the original order does not issue a refund, and the customer's payment stays on the original order. Split orders are created as Paid, so the buyer is not charged again.
- The original order is canceled, but no refund is issued.
- Canceling the original order restocks the inventory.

- The buyer receives no cancellation notice and no additional charge.
The Home page also explains how payment works for the original order and the split orders after splitting.
What goes into a split order
| Field | Details |
|---|---|
| Customer and email | The original order's customer (name) and email address are carried over. |
| Shipping address | The address registered in the cart goes into the standard shipping address field. The billing address is the same address. |
| Phone number | The phone number entered for each address. |
| Tags | Generated from 「分割注文のタグ」 (Split order tags) in settings. By default, multi-ship and multi-ship-from-(original order number) are added. Tags from the original order are not copied. |
| Notes | Generated from 「分割注文のメモ」 (Split order note) in settings. By default, it looks like 「複数配送先注文 1/2(元注文 #1001)」 (Multiple-address order 1/2 (original order #1001)). Notes from the original order are not copied. |
| Payment status | Created as Paid. The buyer is not charged again. |
| Shipping | A shipping line is added with a prorated share of the original order's shipping cost and the extra shipping fee. It's named after the original order's shipping method, or 「配送料」 (Shipping). |
Tags and notes are generated from templates in the app's settings (they're not copied from the original order).
After splitting, the buyer receives an order confirmation email for each address (one per split order). If the order is split into 3, they receive 3 emails. Once all split orders are created, the original order is canceled without notifying the buyer, and the inventory is restocked. No refund is issued.
The Home page also shows: 「分割完了後、元の注文は自動的にキャンセルされ、タグ multi-ship-source が付きます。出荷は分割後の注文に対して行ってください。」 (After splitting, the original order is automatically canceled and tagged multi-ship-source. Fulfill the split orders.)
Reading the split orders list
You can filter by period (today, 7 days, 30 days, or all; the default is 30 days) and by status. 「フィルタを解除」 (Clear filters) resets the filters. Up to 100 entries are shown.
| Column | Details |
|---|---|
| 「日時」 (Date and time) | When the split was processed. |
| 「元注文 / 分割先注文」 (Original order / Destination orders) | Opens the order in the Shopify admin in a new tab. Destination orders are what this help calls split orders. |
| 「配送先数」 (Addresses) | The number of addresses used. |
| 「状態」 (Status) | The processing status. If processing failed, the error type is also shown. |
| 「操作」 (Actions) | 「リトライ」 (Retry) or 「承認して分割」 (Approve and split). A spinner appears while processing. |
Select a row to open 「処理履歴」 (Processing history), where you can see the error details (with the retry count) and a timeline of processing records. 「直近の分割処理」 (Recent splits) on the Home page also shows the latest 5.
What the statuses mean
- 「処理待ち」 (Pending) / 「処理中…」 (Processing)
- The order is waiting to be split, or is being split.
- 「完了」 (Completed)
- Split orders were created and the original order was canceled.
- 「失敗」 (Failed)
- The order couldn't be split. The original order is not canceled and stays ready to ship.
- 「保留(手動承認待ち)」 (On hold (awaiting approval))
- On the Free plan, when 「Free枠超過時は分割を保留し手動承認制にする」 (Hold splits over the Free allowance for manual approval) is on, splits from the 11th each month get this status. Run them with 「承認して分割」 (Approve and split).
- 「対象外」 (Skipped)
- Orders that actually used only one address, or orders whose original order the store canceled before splitting. The original order stays as it is, and there's no charge.
Automatic and manual retries after a failure
If splitting fails partway through, any split orders already created are rolled back, and the original order is left ready to ship. The app retries automatically 3 times (after 1, 5, and 25 minutes). If it still fails, the status becomes 「失敗」 (Failed).
In the following cases, there's no automatic retry and the status becomes 「失敗」 (Failed) right away.
- Amount mismatch (because of tax or discount settings, the total doesn't match the original order)
- Orders with more than 250 line items
- Orders that include custom line items without a variant
- Orders whose address data can't be found
You can rerun a 「失敗」 (Failed) row with 「リトライ」 (Retry) as many times as you need. For how to fix issues, see "MultiShip: Can't split addresses or orders aren't splitting."
FAQ
Why is the original order canceled?
A Shopify order can have only one shipping address. After creating an order for each address, the app automatically cancels the original order so it isn't shipped twice. The inventory is restocked, and the buyer isn't notified of the cancellation. No refund is issued, and the customer's payment stays on the original order.
The original order was canceled. Was it refunded?
No. Canceling the original order doesn't issue a refund. The customer's payment stays on the original order, and the inventory is restocked. Split orders are created as Paid, so the buyer is not charged again.
What emails does the buyer receive?
After splitting, the buyer receives an order confirmation email for each address (one per split order). The buyer isn't notified that the original order was canceled, so no cancellation email is sent.
What happens if I cancel the original order myself before it's split?
Any split that hasn't been processed yet is withdrawn, and its status becomes 「対象外」 (Skipped).
