What MultiShip does

Buyers can choose different shipping addresses on the cart page, either item by item or by splitting the quantity of the same item. The buyer checks out and pays just once, as usual. After payment, the app creates one order per shipping address (split orders) and automatically cancels the order the buyer paid for (the original order).

  1. The buyer adds addresses and assigns itemsIn the 「配送先を分ける」 (Split shipping addresses) block on the cart page, the buyer adds shipping addresses and assigns each item to one.
  2. The buyer checks out onceThe extra shipping fee for the second and later addresses is added to the cart automatically as the product 「追加配送先の送料」 (Additional address shipping fee).
  3. The app splits the orderIt creates one order per address marked as Paid, automatically cancels the original order, restocks the inventory, and adds the tag multi-ship-source. Canceling the original order does not issue a refund. The customer's payment stays on the original order.
  4. The store ships the split ordersEach split order is fulfilled separately by the store.
The original order is canceled automatically

When splitting is complete, the original order is automatically canceled and tagged multi-ship-source. This is expected behavior. Canceling the original order does not issue a refund, and the customer's payment stays on the original order. Split orders are created as Paid, so the buyer is not charged again. Fulfill the split orders, not the original order.

The app's admin shows the name 「複数配送先アプリ」 and the theme editor shows 「複数配送先」 (Multiple shipping addresses). Both mean MultiShip. In this help, the order the buyer paid for is called the "original order," and the orders created for each address are called "split orders." The app's 「分割注文一覧」 (Split orders list) labels split orders as 「分割先注文」 (Destination orders).

Before you start

  • The admin and storefront are in Japanese only.
  • Address entry is fixed to the Japanese format (47 prefectures, 7-digit postal code, 10- or 11-digit phone number).
  • The cart block, and the address book block used with legacy customer accounts, appear in themes that let you add app blocks in the theme editor. With new customer accounts, the address book appears automatically on the Profile page.

The 「セットアップ」 (Setup) checklist on the Home page

When you open the app, the Home page shows a 「セットアップ」 (Setup) checklist. Once all three items are complete, the checklist hides automatically.

ItemWhen it's marked complete
「アプリのインストール」 (Install the app)Complete as soon as you install the app.
「設定の保存」 (Save settings)Complete when you save on the settings screen.
「テーマにApp Blockを追加」 (Add the app block to your theme)Marked complete automatically the first time the cart block appears on your store. You can add the block from 「テーマエディタを開く」 (Open theme editor).

Steps to get started

  1. Turn on the featureIn the left menu, open 「設定」 (Settings) and turn on 「複数配送先機能を有効にする」 (Enable multiple shipping addresses). It's off by default, and the cart block doesn't appear while it's off. You can also turn it on with the 「有効にする」 (Enable) button on the Home page.
  2. Review and save your settingsCheck the maximum number of addresses, target products, how unassigned items are handled, the extra shipping fee per additional address, and so on. Then click 「保存」 (Save) in the save bar at the top of the screen. You'll see 「設定を保存しました」 (Settings saved). Saving automatically creates the product 「追加配送先の送料」 (Additional address shipping fee). The app uses this product, so don't delete it.
  3. Add the block to the cartClick 「テーマエディタを開く」 (Open theme editor) in the 「セットアップ」 (Setup) checklist on the Home page. Or, in the Shopify admin left menu, click Online Store to open the Themes page, then click "Edit theme" (shown as "Customize" on some screens) on your current theme to open the theme editor. (If your Shopify admin is in Japanese, this menu may briefly show as "Online Store" in English while the page loads.) From the selector at the top of the screen, choose Cart, click Add block, choose Apps, add 「配送先を分ける」 (Split shipping addresses), and click Save in the upper right.
  4. Check it on your storeAdd a target product to the cart and confirm that the 「配送先を分ける」 (Split shipping addresses) block appears on the cart page. Once you open your store's cart page, 「テーマにApp Blockを追加」 (Add the app block to your theme) in the Home page 「セットアップ」 (Setup) checklist is marked complete.
  5. Test splitting with a test orderPlace an order with items assigned to two addresses. In the left menu, open 「分割注文一覧」 (Split orders list) and confirm that the status is 「完了」 (Completed) and that the split orders were created. In Orders in the Shopify admin, you can also confirm that the original order is canceled and tagged multi-ship-source, and that the split orders are tagged multi-ship (with default settings). Test orders are split too and count toward the free allowance and usage charges. On the Free plan, once you go over the 10 free splits per month, each split from the 11th on is charged $1.99, so keep an eye on how many tests you run.
If you use the address book

On the Standard plan and above, the address book is available for logged-in customers. With legacy customer accounts, you add a block to your theme. With new customer accounts, it appears automatically on the Profile page. For details, see "MultiShip address book: setup and how customers use it."

Before you go live

  • Is 「複数配送先機能を有効にする」 (Enable multiple shipping addresses) turned on?
  • Is the 「配送先を分ける」 (Split shipping addresses) block added to your theme's cart template and saved?
  • Do your target product settings (all products, specific collections, or specific product tags) include the items in the cart?
  • Is the extra shipping fee per additional address correct?
  • Have you told your fulfillment staff that the original order is canceled automatically and that they should ship the split orders?
  • Will you tell buyers, if needed (for example, in a notice on your store), that they'll receive an order confirmation email for each split order (3 emails if the order is split into 3)?
  • Can buyers purchase without going through the cart page (a cart drawer, "Buy it now" on product pages, or buttons like Shop Pay)? If so, do you understand that orders placed that way are not split?
  • Have you excluded the product 「追加配送先の送料」 (Additional address shipping fee) from your theme's collection lists and search?

Common stumbling points for first-time users

The block doesn't appear in the cart
Check that 「複数配送先機能を有効にする」 (Enable multiple shipping addresses) is on in settings, that you added the block to the cart template and saved, and that the items in the cart are target products. The block also doesn't appear when the cart is empty.
The original order has been canceled
When splitting is complete, the original order is automatically canceled and tagged multi-ship-source. This is expected behavior. Fulfill the split orders.
The original order was canceled. Was it refunded?
Canceling the original order does not issue a refund, and the customer's payment stays on the original order. Split orders are created as Paid, so the buyer is not charged again. Canceling the original order restocks the inventory.
The buyer received several order confirmation emails
After splitting, the buyer receives an order confirmation email for each address (one per split order). If the order is split into 3, they get 3 emails. The buyer is not notified that the original order was canceled. This is expected behavior.
A product called 「追加配送先の送料」 (Additional address shipping fee) shows up in the cart or store
This is the extra shipping fee for the second and later addresses. Its quantity equals the number of addresses added. When the order is split, it is moved into the shipping cost of each order. The app manages this product, so don't delete it from the Shopify admin. It also appears in the product list in the Shopify admin. Because of how it's added to the cart, the product must be published to the Online Store, and the app can't unpublish it. As a result, it also appears in your store's collection lists and search results. We recommend excluding it from your theme's collection lists and search (exclude it by the tag multiship-surcharge, or hide it with the Search & Discovery app). The app adds these tags (multiship and multiship-surcharge) automatically when it creates the product. If you delete the tags, they won't be added back automatically, so don't delete them.
Not sure what to enter in the shipping address field at checkout
In the checkout shipping address field, enter the address for address ①. The block also shows this guidance. Each split order automatically gets the address registered in the cart.
An order with only one address isn't split
An order that actually used only one address doesn't need splitting, so it's marked 「対象外」 (Skipped), and the original order stays as it is.
On the Free plan, I can only add up to 3 addresses
On the Free plan, buyers can add up to 3 addresses per order. You can't enter a number above 3 in 「最大配送先数」 (Maximum addresses) in settings, and 「現在のプラン(Free)では最大3件」 (Up to 3 on your current plan (Free)) appears. To allow 4 or more, change to the Standard plan or higher.
Orders placed from the cart drawer or "Buy it now" aren't split
Addresses can be split only for orders placed through the 「配送先を分ける」 (Split shipping addresses) block on the cart page. Purchases from a cart drawer (the small cart that slides in from the side of the screen), the "Buy it now" button on product pages, or buttons like Shop Pay skip the cart page, so they aren't split. Ask buyers who want to split addresses to click 「ご購入手続きへ」 (Proceed to checkout) on the cart page.
Test orders used up my free allowance
Test orders are split too and count toward the free allowance and usage charges. On the Free plan, each split from the 11th on is subject to a $1.99 usage charge.

For detailed checks, see "MultiShip: Can't split addresses or orders aren't splitting."
